Depression is a serious mental illness that can affect the way a person thinks, feels and acts. It is more than just a temporary sadness or “low”. Depression can manifest itself through persistent feelings of dejection, hopelessness and loss of interest in activities that once brought joy.
The causes of depression are varied and can include genetic, biological, environmental and psychological factors.
Symptoms of depression can vary from person to person, but there are some common signs that may indicate it. These include:
– Persistent sadness or low mood
– Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were previously enjoyed
– Changes in appetite – weight gain or loss, regardless of diet
– Sleep disturbances – insomnia or excessive sleeping
– Loss of energy or increased fatigue
– Increase in physical activity (e.g. restlessness, hand wringing) or slowed movements and speech
– Feeling of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate feelings of guilt
– Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
– Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide plans
