Generally speaking, a cough is referred to as an irritating cough when it is dry. Initially, many sufferers experience a scratching in the throat. This is characterized by loud, almost barking noises with each coughing blow and the lack of secretion of mucus (non-productive cough).
In a large number of cases, the irritable cough is the harbinger of an infectious disease (for example, a cold or bronchitis). Over time, the cough then becomes productive. Until there is expectoration and thus relief, irritable cough often involves violent coughing fits. In most cases, an inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis) also accompanies the irritating cough. Due to the cold, the nose swells and is blocked. Due to the blocked nose, sufferers are more likely to breathe through the mouth, which is why the mucous membranes dry out even more, and promote coughing fits.
In addition, irritable cough can be a sign of bronchial asthma and can also occur as a reaction when foreign bodies are in the airways.
